What it does
SF2 Player is Bertom Audio's "simple SoundFont player plug-in instrument" that loads one preset per instance. Its synth engine was written from scratch with real-time use and low CPU load in mind.
- SoundFont 2.04 support: almost fully compliant with the specification, including its modulators, envelopes, LFOs, and the built-in chorus and reverb.
- One preset per instance: load a SoundFont, pick the preset you want and play it; use more instances for more parts.
- Mono, legato and glide: added in version 1.1.0 and controlled with MIDI CC5, CC65, CC68, CC126 and CC127, for monophonic lines with portamento.
- Extra MIDI modulators: default mappings for volume envelope (CC72, CC73, CC75), filter and vibrato, which make older presets that lack these controls more playable.
- Efficiency: runtime CPU dispatch picks SSE2 or AVX2 code automatically, instead of shipping separate builds.
- Interface: a clean, scalable window with a folder list for finding SoundFonts; right-click the background to reset the UI scaling.
The current version is 1.1.0 (September 2026). It is pay-what-you-want, including free, and is sold through Lemon Squeezy.

When to use it
SF2 Player is the better pick when you only need to play existing SoundFonts with little fuss and low CPU use. Compared with TX16Wx and TAL-Sampler, it cannot build or edit multisampled instruments, but it loads SF2 files directly and follows the format's own modulators and effects. Unlike sforzando, it is built only around SoundFonts, and one KVR user found it much more stable. Kontakt 8 is a far bigger platform for commercial libraries, while SF2 Player is free and does one job.
- Best for: reviving old SF2 libraries, General MIDI-style sketches, game and chiptune-adjacent sounds, and DAWs that no longer load SoundFonts natively.
- Genres: any, especially lo-fi, retro and video game music.
- Look elsewhere if: you want to build, edit or layer your own multisampled instruments (TX16Wx or TAL-Sampler), or play SFZ and commercial libraries (Kontakt 8).
- Tip: send CC72, CC73 and CC75 from your controller or automation to reshape a preset's volume envelope when it has none of its own controls.
What producers say
There is little coverage yet, but the one user review is very positive about its stability.
- KVR users rate it 5 out of 5 from one review (2026), which called it "WAY more solid" than sforzando and a fix for SoundFonts in Ableton Live on Apple Silicon.
- Criticisms: the same reviewer missed ADSR envelope controls on the interface; version 1.1.0 later added volume envelope control through MIDI CCs.
