Dynamics processing plugin from AudioThing.

Best for: Drums, Mix Bus. Genres: all genres.

Keywords: bus processing, drums, full mix, mix bus, mixing, oversampling, randomize, resizable UI, sidechain input, single-band, vintage.

What it does

Arguments is a "vintage-style test equipment plugin for tone generation and dual audio processing", says AudioThing. It combines two signals using mathematical operations taken from analog research processors.

Operations: nine, including A+B, A-B, A multiplied by B, and the square root of A squared plus B squared.
Functions: six modes such as logarithmic, square root, derivative and squared.
Sources: an internal oscillator (sine or LFO) or a side-chain input as the second signal.
Extras: multi-mode filter with resonance, oversampling to shape texture, resizable interface and a preset randomizer.

When to use it

Arguments is a sound-design tool rather than a conventional compressor: it fuses or cross-modulates two signals instead of reducing dynamics. Reach for it for ring-mod-like textures, tone generation and odd processed sounds; use a rated compressor such as Pro-C 3 for actual gain control.

Genres: experimental, electronic, ambient and sound design.
