Continua is a virtual analog synth with three oscillators whose waveforms morph continuously, in classic, additive, supersaw and phase-modulation modes.
Dual morphing filters, flexible envelopes and LFOs, a Genetics panel that mutates patches, an arpeggiator, MPE and MTS-ESP come for $79.
Best for: Keys & Synths, Bass, Sound Design. Genres: Electronic & EDM, Pop, Ambient & Cinematic, Hip-Hop & Trap.
Keywords: analog, MPE support, clean, additive, classic, evolving, arpeggiator, basses, virtual analog, cinematic, digital classic, hardware emulation, harsh, leads, pads, sound design, visual feedback, 90s, CPU-heavy, deep, modulation matrix, punchy, subtractive, surgical, tempo-synced.
What it does
Continua is a virtual analog synth whose three oscillators use continuously variable waveforms instead of fixed shapes, with morphing filters, a lot of modulation and a Genetics panel for evolving patches.
- Oscillators: three, each with warp, shape and skew controls, in four modes: Classic (morphing analog), Additive (64 sine partials with per-harmonic levels), Supersaw or Supersquare (five detuned voices) and IXA (phase modulation and waveshaping). A noise source with colour control adds a fourth sound source.
- Filters: two morphing state-variable filters, in series or parallel, in 2-pole or 4-pole form, sweeping from low-pass through band-pass and high-pass to notch.
- Envelopes: two ADSRs with curve control on attack, decay and release, plus two flexible envelope generators of up to 99 steps each.
- LFOs and random: four flexible LFOs with phase, shape, skew and warp, and sample and hold with smoothing. Every knob is a modulation destination, assigned with a right-click.
- Genetics panel: builds a branching tree of mutations from any patch. You choose which parameter groups may change, audition the results and branch deeper from any node.
- Arpeggiator: 18 patterns, including Converge, Diverge and Brownian motion, a Chance knob for probabilistic rests, host sync with dotted and triplet values, and a range of up to two octaves.
- Expression and tuning: full MPE, TUN tuning tables and MTS-ESP microtuning, with MPE, aftertouch, pitch bend and tuning set per instance.
A fully working demo with a 20-minute session timer and saving disabled is available.

When to use it
Continua takes a different route from Serum 2, Vital and Diva, the usual choices among the rated synths: smoothly morphing oscillators and filters, a lot of modulation, and the Genetics panel for finding new variations of a patch. It lacks Diva's warmer, more characterful analog sound and the wavetable import and large preset libraries of Serum 2 and Vital, which are built around wavetables. Reviewers found it strongest on evolving pads, moody leads and clean basses rather than classic fat analog tones. It costs less than Diva or Serum 2, though Vital's free tier is cheaper still.
- Best for: evolving pads, atmospheric beds, moody leads, clean mono basses, MPE playing and exploring variations of a patch.
- Genres: ambient, cinematic and TV scoring, electronic and pop.
- Look elsewhere if: you want a warm, characterful analog sound (Diva) or wavetable import and a big third-party preset library (Serum 2 or Vital).
- Tip: go easy on oscillator modulation to keep the tone from turning harsh, and close the editor when you're not using it to save CPU (Sound On Sound).
What producers say
Reviewers rate it as a capable, deep sound-design synth; the main reservation is a clean, digital tone that lacks some analog character.
- Sound On Sound (Nick Rothwell, 2020) praised "a dizzying range of waveforms", flexible modulation, MPE support, clean punchy basses and good built-in effects. It found the sound "precise and digital", sometimes a little harsh, and the animated display heavy on CPU.
- MusicTech (Alex Holmes, 2020) liked the morphing oscillators and filters, deep modulation, visual feedback and light CPU use, and recommended it for ambient, electronic and cinematic work.
- Criticisms: MusicTech felt it "sounds a little flat" next to other virtual analogs, found the interface text-heavy, and noted LFO sync stops at 32nd notes; both reviews found it hard to see which controls a modulator affects.
