What it does

Augmented WOODWINDS is part of Arturia's Augmented series. Arturia says it delivers "a rich, reedy and redefined range of woodwind sounds" that you can "morph to your mood."

Instruments: solo clarinet, bassoon, English horn and flute plus an 11-player orchestral ensemble.
Articulations: 56 articulations across contrabassoon, bassoon, bass clarinet, clarinet, oboe, English horn and flute.
Synth engines: virtual analog (TAE), granular, harmonic, wavetable and simpler engines, blended by the Morph control.
Performance: a 16-step arpeggiator with Chance lane and Auto Regen, MPE and MTS-ESP microtuning.
Effects and presets: 16 effects including ParamEQ, Bitcrusher and BL-20 Flanger, and 300+ presets.

When to use it

Augmented WOODWINDS is the choice when you want woodwind samples that turn into synth pads, pulses and textures rather than a realistic orchestral section like Spitfire Audio BBC Symphony Orchestra Discover and IK Multimedia Miroslav Philharmonik 2. It goes less wide on synth sound design than Spectrasonics Omnisphere 3.

Best for: hybrid scoring, breathy pads and textures, and woodwind-flavored synth parts.
Genres: cinematic, ambient and electronic.
Look elsewhere if: you need realistic orchestral woodwind lines with full articulation control.
Standout: morphing sampled woodwinds into synth layers, with MPE for expressive playing.

What producers say

Engadget's reviewer started out skeptical but was won over by its synth-focused approach.

Engadget (2023) Terrence O'Brien wrote "Arturia pulls it off, largely by leaning into the synth side of things," especially with an MPE controller.
