What it does
Clearmountain Spaces (first released as Clearmountain's Spaces) is a convolution reverb built from impulse responses of three rooms and chambers used by mix engineer Bob Clearmountain. The idea is quick, polished ambience with "the iconic CLEARMOUNTAIN sound" and very little setup.
- Apogee Studio: a short, warm room recorded in Apogee's in-house studio.
- Mix This!: a bright, medium-length chamber from Clearmountain's own studio, which he likens to Motown-era chambers.
- Roscoe: the longest and richest of the three, from a Los Angeles studio chamber.
- Composite spaces: each space has its own fader and on/off switch, so you can blend all three into one reverb.
- Input processing: a 3-band EQ and a switchable de-esser shape the signal before the reverb, so sibilance and mud stay out of the tail.
- Pre-delay, mix and width: global pre-delay, wet/dry mix and a stereo width control, plus a real-time visualizer of the reverb.
- Presets: built by Clearmountain from settings he has used on hit records.
The current version is 1.1.0 (released 30 September 2026). It is sold through Plugin Alliance (on sale at the time of writing), with a 14-day trial and inclusion in the CORE and PRO subscriptions.
When to use it
Clearmountain Spaces works differently from most of the rated reverbs, which are algorithmic: Valhalla Room, Pro-R 2 and VintageVerb let you set size, decay and tone in detail, and Supermassive goes into huge creative washes. Clearmountain Spaces has three fixed real spaces that you blend and filter rather than design. That makes it fast and consistent, and Sound On Sound liked it for making a whole mix sound as if it was recorded in one room. It is also the smaller, cheaper sibling of Clearmountain Domain, which adds delays and pitch-shifting.
- Best for: natural room and chamber ambience on vocals, drums and guitars, and gluing a band mix into one space.
- Genres: pop, rock, R&B, soul and other band and vocal music.
- Look elsewhere if: you want long, modulated or creative reverbs (Supermassive, VintageVerb), or detailed control of decay and size (Pro-R 2, Valhalla Room).
- Tip: Tape Op found small amounts on drum tracks or a guitar bus added a lot of depth; it works on single tracks and as a fully wet send.
What producers say
Reviewers rate it highly as an affordable, simple reverb with a polished sound; the main limit is that there are only three spaces.
- Sound On Sound (Paul White, 2020) highly recommended it, praising the simple interface, the three blendable spaces, the pre-reverb EQ and de-esser, and the low price.
- Tape Op (Gus Berry) praised the depth it adds with little effort and called Roscoe "gorgeous on vocals."
- Criticisms: Tape Op noted there are only three chambers, compared with more in Domain, and first found Mix This! too bright.
