What it does

Stay-Levin is Antelope's vari-mu tube compressor, modeled on a 1960s valve unit that Antelope says "shaped the sound of the US 1960s classics"; reviewers identify it as the Gates STA-Level. It is built to be simple, with "only two knobs and two switches", and Antelope pitches it first at bass and vocals.

Version 1.0.1 needs no Antelope hardware. It is part of the Antelope Cosmos subscription, which has a free trial.

When to use it

Stay-Levin is a simple vintage vari-mu for warm, forward bass and vocals with almost no setup. Compared with the Teletronix LA-2A Leveler Collection and CLA-2A it is a tube vari-mu rather than an opto leveler, and reviewers note more weight and punch in the low end. Unlike MJUC, which offers three vari-mu models with timing control, it has one character and just four controls. Against Pro-C 3 it gives up attack, release and ratio control entirely, but at its sale price it is one of the cheapest ways to add tube compression.

What producers say

The few write-ups are positive about its weight and warmth, with care needed on bass-heavy material.
