LANG-PEQ2 recreates a 1960s solid-state program EQ with a layout like a Pultec, but with more frequency choices.

What it does

LANG-PEQ2 is Antelope Audio's model of a 1960s solid-state program EQ, which the developer calls "a faithful recreation of a solid-state EQ with expanded frequency controls." The layout follows the classic boost-and-cut program EQ, but the low end gets separate frequency choices for boost and cut.

Separate LF boost and cut frequencies: unlike the classic design, the low boost and the low cut can sit at different frequencies, so you can lift one area and tuck in another.
Simultaneous boost and cut: both low knobs work at once, the well-known trick for a tight, controlled low end.
High boost with bandwidth: frequency selectors and a bandwidth control set where the top-end boost lands and how wide it is.
Midrange width: Antelope also lists control over the width of the midrange shaping.
Developer's suggested uses: a go-to EQ for bass guitar and smooth vocals, and extra shine on vocals and drum overheads.
Tracking to mastering: meant for use while recording, mixing and mastering.

Version 1.0.1 needs no Antelope hardware. The purchase also includes a Synergy Core real-time version for compatible Antelope interfaces. It is also part of Antelope's Cosmos subscription, which has a free trial.

When to use it

LANG-PEQ2 is a solid-state take on the boost-and-cut low-end idea behind the rated program EQs here, the Pultec Passive EQ Collection and Waves PuigTec EQs, which are tube designs. It has one practical gain over them: the low boost and low cut don't have to share a frequency, which makes the classic move easier to aim. It is a broad-strokes tone shaper, not a surgical tool; for precise notches or dynamic bands, Pro-Q 4 or TDR Nova are the right picks. At the sale price it is a cheap way to get this style of EQ.

Best for: low-end shaping on bass guitar and kick, smooth vocals, and adding shine to vocals and drum overheads.
Genres: any; it is a general tone-shaping EQ.
Look elsewhere if: you want the tube Pultec sound (Pultec Passive EQ Collection or Antelope's own VEQ-1A), or precise, visual EQ work (Pro-Q 4).
