What it does
BA-6A is Antelope Audio's model of a 1950s limiting amplifier built for TV and radio broadcasting, a balanced three-stage design with nine valves, a rectifier and a voltage regulator. The developer describes its sound as "high gain and fat yet gritty".
- Vari-mu valve compression: true tube gain reduction, which the developer notes is faster in attack and more variable in release than optical designs.
- Three-stage amplifier: modelled on the balanced three-stage limiting amplifier of the original, run with moderate drive.
- Character: hard knee, fast attack and medium release, so it grabs peaks firmly rather than leveling gently.
- Peak control: built to prevent overmodulation and overloading, as the broadcast original was.
- Vocals forward: the developer pitches it for bringing vocals to the front of a mix and thickening the instruments around them.
- Grit: adds character and recognisable mojo to guitar tracks, and works on aggressive instruments, peaky signals and full mixes.
- runs in a DAW with no Antelope hardware; a Synergy Core version also runs in real time on compatible Antelope interfaces.
Version 1.0 can also be used through the Antelope Cosmos subscription, which has a free trial.

When to use it
BA-6A is the pick when you want a tube limiter that is heard, not hidden: thick, gritty and quick to clamp down. Compared with the Teletronix LA-2A Leveler Collection or CLA-2A, it has a harder knee and faster attack and adds more grit, so it is less of a smooth leveler. It is closer in spirit to the Empirical Labs EL8 Distressor as a colour box, but it is a single vintage tube character rather than a unit with many modes. MJUC covers several vari-mu styles with more controls; BA-6A is the more aggressive, single-purpose tool. Within Antelope's range it is rougher and firmer than ALT-436C.
- Best for: aggressive vocals, gritty guitars, drum colour and parallel crush.
- Genres: rock, pop, hip-hop and anything that wants obvious vintage tube character.
- Look elsewhere if: you need clean, transparent compression or gentle leveling; Pro-C 3 or the LA-2A Collection fit better.
