What it does

ALT-436C is Antelope Audio's model of a late-1950s vari-mu tube compressor, the third revision of the 436 design. It is kept deliberately simple, with a threshold, a release time and a fixed attack, and is pitched at vocals, bass and bus work.

Version 1.0.3 is listed on KVR. It is also part of the Antelope Cosmos subscription, which bundles more than 75 Antelope native plugins.

When to use it

ALT-436C is the pick when you want a plain vintage vari-mu with almost nothing to set, at a very low sale price. Compared with the Teletronix LA-2A Leveler Collection or CLA-2A, it uses tube gain reduction rather than an opto cell, and it gives you a release control those levelers lack. MJUC offers several vari-mu flavours plus timing and drive controls in one plugin, so it is the more flexible tube compressor; ALT-436C models one unit with fixed attack. Next to Pro-C 3 or The Glue it has no sidechain filter, mix knob or metering extras. Within Antelope's own range it is the gentler choice than BA-6A, which is voiced for grit and hard-knee limiting.

What producers say

Feedback is thin but positive on sound and value, with a wish for more presets.
