What it does
ToneShaper is a free "passive tone and body control" plugin from Analog Obsession. It is a deliberately small tool: a passive tone stage for tilting the balance and weight of a sound, without added saturation.
- Tone: moves the sound from darker to brighter in one control.
- Body: adds or removes fullness and weight.
- Output: level compensation, so you can match levels after a tone change.
- Fully passive design: the passive circuit causes around 20 dB of gain loss, which is made up with a clean boost.
- No coloration: there are no non-linear elements, so it shapes tone without intentionally adding harmonics.
ToneShaper was released in September 2026. It is free and is downloaded from Analog Obsession's Patreon page. No version number is given.

When to use it
ToneShaper is the better pick for fast, broad tone moves when you don't want to think in bands and frequencies. Compared with Pro-Q 4 or TDR Nova it has no bands, analyser or dynamic EQ; it trades precision for two musical controls. It is closer to the PuigTec EQs or the Pultec Passive EQ Collection in spirit, but cleaner, since it adds no tube colour, and it costs nothing. Next to TDR VOS SlickEQ, another simple mix EQ, it is even more stripped back, with just Tone and Body.
- Best for: quick tonal tilts and adding or removing body on drum buses, instrument groups and full mixes, on a zero budget.
- Genres: any.
- Look elsewhere if: you need precise bands, dynamic EQ or analysis (Pro-Q 4, TDR Nova), or want passive-EQ colour (Pultec Passive EQ Collection).
- Tip: judge changes in the full mix rather than solo, and use Output to level-match before comparing.
What producers say
Early coverage treats it as a useful, focused freebie rather than a do-everything EQ.
- Greg Kocis review: liked that it "doesn't try to overwhelm you" with controls and found it useful on drum buses and in full-mix contexts.
- Scope: the same review noted it is not trying to be a channel strip or console emulation, and raised no real criticisms.
