What it does

PreBOX is a free preamp simulator from Analog Obsession with 11 selectable preamp models.

Input: gain with automatic compensation (plus or minus 24 dB), so you can drive a preamp harder without the level jumping.
Output: a clean output stage with its own +/-24 dB control.
Filters: switchable high-pass and low-pass filters with several frequency options.
Part of the free Color bundle, alongside the Distox distortion plugin.

When to use it

A free way to compare different preamp flavours on the same source, from gentle warmth to grit. Try it on drums, bass, vocals or synths when a track needs a little weight or edge.

It is a colour tool rather than a full channel strip. For a complete chain, the developer's LOADED has preamp, EQ and dynamics together.
