What it does

Ample Bass Yinyang samples a Fodera Yinyang, a boutique electric bass with a modern, hi-fi tone. Ample Sound offers it with "an extensive range of realistic articulations" and its MIDI writing system.

Samples: a fingerstyle library, with drop tuning down to B0.
13 articulations: sustain, palm mute, natural harmonic, hammer-on and pull-off, legato slide, slide in, slide out, slap, pop, tap, accentuated, repeat note and dead note.
Legato: a polyphonic legato and slide smoother for realistic legato at any interval.
Riffer 4: a built-in MIDI riff editor with piano-roll and guitar-tab views you can switch between, string display in the piano roll, MIDI import and export, editing of fingering, articulation, legato and expression, and MIDI CC and velocity lanes with curve presets. It comes with a large riff library.
Tab Reader 4: imports bass tracks from Guitar Pro files (GP3 to GP8) with fingering, articulations and performance data kept. Files from other tab editors are not supported.
Amps and cabinets: three amp heads (Vintage-15, Bass-500, Bass-Pro), four cabinets (1x15, 2x10, 4x10, 8x10) and four mics (U87, C414, MD421, SM57).

When to use it

Ample Bass Yinyang is the better pick for modern slap, funk and fusion lines with a clear, hi-fi tone. Compared with MODO BASS 2, which models many electric basses and lets you change pickups and strings, it samples one boutique bass in depth and adds tab import and the Riffer for writing parts. Trilian covers more bass types, including acoustic and synth, but Yinyang's slap, pop and tap articulations are more focused on that one modern sound. Its tone favours presence over midrange bite, so it is less suited to rock.

Best for: slap and pop lines, exposed bass solos and smooth modern sustain parts.
Genres: funk, R&B, gospel, fusion, jazz, pop and EDM.
Look elsewhere if: you want a vintage passive tone or rock and punk grit; Ample Bass P or J, or MODO BASS 2, fit better.
Tip: real slap parts can be very peaky, so plan on a limiter after it (Bedroom Producers Blog).

Reviewers rate it highly for modern styles, with its narrow tonal focus the main caveat.

Bedroom Producers Blog (2017, version II) gave it 88%, with 10/10 for features and 9/10 for sound, praising the slap, pop and tap articulations, the dual slap and pop feature and the warm sustain.
Criticisms: Bedroom Producers Blog found it a poor fit for traditional rock or punk, with less midrange cut than a vintage bass, and said slap parts may need limiting.
