What it does

Ample Bass J is a sampled electric bass based on a Fender Jazz Bass (John English Masterbuilt), recorded for both fingerstyle and pick playing. It is the four-string, Jazz-style member of Ample's bass range, with the same writing tools and amp section as its siblings.

Two libraries: Fingerstyle and Pick, with drop tuning down to B0.
Articulations: 13 in all: sustain, palm mute, natural harmonic, hammer-on and pull-off, legato slide, slide in, slide out, slap, pop, tap, accentuated, repeat note and dead note.
Legato: a polyphonic legato and slide smoother for legato at any interval and speed.
Riffer 4: a MIDI riff editor with switchable piano-roll and tab views, string visualisation with automatic fingering so two notes never share a string, technique, legato and CC editing, MIDI import and export, and a library of bass riffs.
Tab Reader 4: imports whole bass tracks from Guitar Pro files (GP3 to GP8) into Riffer, keeping fingering and articulations; tab files from other sources are not supported.
Amp section: three bass heads (Vintage-15, Bass-500 and Bass-Pro), four cabinets (1x15, 2x10, 4x10 and 8x10) and four mics per cabinet (U87, C414, MD421 and SM57).
Effects: 8-band EQ, compressor, delay and convolution reverb.

When to use it

Ample Bass J samples one Jazz Bass in depth, with finger, pick and slap articulations, tab import and Ample's Riffer for writing lines, where MODO BASS 2 physically models many electric basses and Trilian combines acoustic, electric and synth basses in one instrument. Next to Ample Bass P (on the site) it is the brighter, more versatile of the two Fender models.

Best for: everyday electric bass for pop, rock, funk and soul, including slap and pop parts.
Genres: pop, rock, funk, R&B and soul.
Look elsewhere if: you want many bass models in one plugin (MODO BASS 2 or Trilian), a rounder Precision tone (Ample Bass P), or a heavy picked five-string (Ample Metal Ray5).
