What it does

Flex Beat is AIR Music Technology's pattern-based beat manipulation effect, similar in spirit to Gross Beat. You trigger stutters, gates, chops and scratches from pads in real time, and the developer aims it at beatmakers and at sound designers for film, TV and games.

16 performance pads: each pad holds a pattern preset, and the pads can be played from MIDI through a MIDI sidechain input.
Pad modes: Loop, One Shot and Hold, so a pattern can repeat, play once or run only while held.
Launch quantization: pad triggers snap to the beat, which keeps live performance in time.
Pattern editor: a desktop grid editor with snap, adjustable curve types, envelope tools and randomisation for building your own patterns.
Preset library: pad presets with preview, covering beat chops, DJ scratches, trance gates and pitch effects.
Gross Beat compatibility: imports and exports pattern presets in .fnv format.
Mix: a dry/wet control for blending the effect with the source.

When to use it

Flex Beat is a pad-driven performance tool rather than a full effects sequencer. It has fewer effect types than Sugar Bytes Effectrix2 and iZotope Stutter Edit 2, the rated choices for sequenced glitch and stutter work, and it does not go as deep on gating and volume shaping as Cableguys ShaperBox 3. Flex Beat is simpler and quicker to play, and its .fnv support means Gross Beat patterns from FL Studio carry over. Its standalone MPC version makes it the obvious pick for Akai hardware users who want to mangle loops live.

Best for: gates, stutters, half-time and scratch effects performed from pads, on a DAW or MPC.
Genres: hip-hop, trap and electronic music.
Look elsewhere if: you need a multi-effect step sequencer (Effectrix2), or detailed performance glitching (Stutter Edit 2).
Tip: Plugin Nerds suggests it shines in loop-based work and live hardware setups, where you trigger DJ-style effects without drawing automation.
