What it does

Stone Pro is a modular console strip from Acustica Audio, inspired by British broadcast and studio designs of the 1960s and 1970s. The developer's idea is that "musicality comes before complexity": it favours flow and balance between stages over long lists of options.

It runs at 44.1 to 96 kHz. A free version called Stone is also available. The product page does not state a trial.

When to use it

Stone Pro is the pick for older, softer British colour on buses and the master, with stages you can reorder. Compared with bx_console SSL 4000 E and SSL 4K G, it trades the punchy, modern SSL channel for 1960s and 1970s broadcast tone, passive EQs and a germanium limiter. Unlike Scheps Omni Channel, it has no gate or detailed compressor section, and its Magic Morph knob does in one move what would take several controls elsewhere. It is less precise and less visual than Native Channel Strip 2, but more about character than correction.
