What it does

Rust 2 recreates an ultra-rare 1960s Motown passive 7-band EQ, heard on records by Stevie Wonder, Marvin Gaye, Diana Ross and The Jackson 5. Version 2 adds a new preamp stage, aiming for "classic analog tone with dynamic harmonic control".

It works at 44.1 to 96 kHz. The store showed a sale price when checked. Owners of the original Rust get upgrade codes, and owners of Yellow, Ruby 3 or Salt 2 get crossgrade codes. The product page does not mention a demo.

When to use it

Rust 2 differs in layout from most rated character EQs, which are tube designs with a few boost and cut controls, such as the Pultec Passive EQ Collection and PuigTec EQs, best for broad lows and highs, and Manley Massive Passive, a flexible mastering EQ. Like Mäag Audio EQ4 it is fixed-band, but EQ4 is known mainly for its Air band, while Rust 2 has seven fixed bands spread across the spectrum, closer to a small graphic EQ with analog color. That makes it quick for broad tone moves on single tracks and buses, with the preamp adding as much or as little saturation as the input level asks for. It is not a surgical tool, since the bands can't be moved.
