What it does
Pearl 3 is the third generation of Acustica Audio's Pearl, a recreation of a rare Italian broadcast processor. The developer's tagline is "Not copied. Understood.", and the aim is "musical shaping, not surgical correction" with few, decisive controls.
- Three plugins: Pearl 3 EQ, Pearl 3 Comp and Pearl 3 Strip, which combines both in one channel strip.
- Pearl 3 EQ: emulates a solid-state equaliser with broad, tone-shaping bands rather than narrow corrective cuts.
- Pearl 3 Comp: a vintage-style compressor that responds to signal level like the original circuit, meant as firm but musical control and mix glue.
- Preamp stages: new in version 3 for both the EQ and the compressor, adding drive, harmonics and solidity.
- Reorderable modules: in the strip you can change the order of the EQ and compressor.
- Displays: a real-time EQ curve and gain reduction metering.
- Hyper engine: built on Acustica's Hyper resampling technology.
It runs at 44.1, 48, 88.2 and 96 kHz. Owners of earlier Pearl versions get a free upgrade.

When to use it
Pearl 3 is the pick for a less common console colour: a rare Italian broadcast tone with gentle EQ and compression meant for character rather than precision. Compared with Native Channel Strip 2 and bx_console SSL 4000 E, it has no gate or expander and fewer surgical EQ options, but it brings a different, softer flavour from the familiar British desk sound. Next to the API Vision Channel Strip Collection it is less punchy and more about smooth shaping. Unlike Scheps Omni Channel, which packs many modules into one strip, Pearl 3 keeps to an EQ, a compressor and preamp drive, so it is quicker to set but narrower in scope.
- Best for: smooth tone shaping and light compression on buses, the master and melodic tracks, or as a second colour next to an SSL-style strip.
- Genres: any.
- Look elsewhere if: you need surgical EQ, a gate or many modules in one strip; Scheps Omni Channel or Pro-Q 4 suit that better.
