What it does

El Rey 2 is a tube compressor built by Acustica Audio and Studio DMI with producer and mixer Greg Wells. Acustica describes the source as "one of the finest, most musical-sounding analog tube compressors"; Tape Op's review of the first version identified it as the RCA BA-6A limiting amplifier.

KVR lists the first El Rey as version 3.0.4.

When to use it

El Rey 2 sits nearer the Teletronix LA-2A Leveler Collection and CLA-2A, the usual tube-style levellers, than CLA-76 and the 1176 Classic Limiter Collection, which are fast character compressors: it is a thick, smooth tube compressor with fixed timing choices, valued for glue and low-end weight rather than precise control. Version 2 adds stereo, mid-side and true peak options that make it more usable on the mix bus than the original. Compared with Pro-C 3 it has far fewer settings and much more colour. Its signature presets are a draw if you like starting from a known engineer's setup.

What producers say

Tape Op found the original El Rey thicker-sounding than almost any compressor, with CPU load as the main drawback.
