What it does

Desert is based on early-1960s recording and mixing equipment from a Lagos studio owned by a British record label: germanium preamps, passive inductor EQs and an opto compressor/limiter. The developer offers "8 input amps with eight different output amps, plus a drive control".

KVR lists version 2.3.5. It launched in 2021 with an introductory price. A demo and a PDF manual are available.

When to use it

Desert models much rarer germanium-era hardware than Scheps Omni Channel, Native Channel Strip 2 or bx_console SSL 4000 E, so it gives a darker, older colour that suits warm vintage tones more than a modern, punchy console sound. Its EQ is a broad two-band passive design, so compared with those strips' four-band parametric EQs it is for tone, not surgery. Compared with the Pultec Passive EQ Collection, its EQ is similarly broad, but the strip adds opto compression and germanium drive in the same window. The mix-and-match preamps give it more saturation options than most single-console models.
