What it does
Crimson 1.5 is Acustica Audio's "specialized compression/analog saturation effects unit", built to give creative engineers a range of colourful distortion flavours. It pairs a VCA-style compressor with a saturator and a preamp section, from gentle warmth on bass to heavy drum distortion.
- Crimson Comp: a VCA compressor emulation with 70s and 80s analog character, based on what Acustica calls an expensive German unit.
- Compressor extras: Asym adds harmonics, ShMod shapes the attack, and Insane trades accuracy for speed.
- Crimson Saturator: two circuit emulations: FET mode for warmer even harmonics and ZENER mode for brighter odd harmonics, with a Shape control and a Hard/Soft switch.
- Crimson Main: a preamp section with distortion and an analog-style clipper to tame transients.
- Supersatu: a switch in the Main section that inserts the compressor into the saturation stage.
- Three plugins: Comp, Saturator and Main come as separate modules, so you can use the compressor or the saturator on its own.
First released in December 2017, Crimson is listed on KVR at version 2.3.5. A four-week trial was offered at launch.

When to use it
Crimson 1.5 is the better pick when you want compression and saturation working together in one sampled, analog-flavoured suite. Compared with Decapitator, it adds a real VCA compressor and a clipper, but it has fewer saturation styles and a more involved workflow across three modules. Against the Black Box HG-2, it is aimed more at aggressive colour on single sources than at parallel tube warmth on the mix bus. It also costs far more than Klanghelm's IVGI, which is the lighter choice when all you need is subtle drive.
- Best for: squashed, driven drums, gritty bass and creatively distorted sources that also need dynamic control.
- Genres: rock, hip-hop, electronic and metal.
- Look elsewhere if: you want subtle, light colour on many tracks (IVGI or Saturation Knob) or quick, broad saturation styles (Decapitator).
