Brown is an Acustica Audio suite sampled from 1940s and 1950s all-tube compressors first built for the US Army and later used in broadcast and classic studios.

It adds 60 preamps and three EQ types, for €229 (about $260).

What it does

Brown models rare all-tube compressors from the 1940s and 50s, originally made for the US Army and widely used in AM radio, that later turned up at Capitol, A&M, Motown West and Record Plant. The developer notes that records by "Frank Sinatra, Beach Boys, Steely Dan, Pink Floyd, Foo Fighters, and more" used these units.

Dual-mono tube compressor: three switchable emulations: the original model, a custom (improved) mode and Acustica's hybrid "Frankenstein" mode.
Model 444 EQ: a 4-band semi-parametric EQ with high-pass and low-pass filters, from a unit used in film production.
Model 312 EQ: a 3-band inductor-based EQ with a discrete op-amp design.
Model 511 EQ: a 2-band EQ combining discrete transistor and active inductor stages, from late-1960s US units.
Zero-latency EQ versions: the EQs come in standard and zero-latency variants.
60 preamps: 24 line, 24 mic and 12 custom emulations, spanning hardware from the 1940s to the present.
Four plugins: Brown Channel Strip, EQ, Compressor and Preamp; the strip puts preamp, EQ and compressor in one window.

KVR lists version 2.3.5. It launched in 2021 with an introductory price. A demo and a PDF manual are available. Like other Acustica plugins it uses the Acqua engine.

When to use it

Brown centres on rarer 1940s–50s broadcast tube compressors with a large preamp and EQ set, so it is more of a full vintage channel than a single compressor. Compared with the Teletronix LA-2A Leveler Collection or CLA-2A, which focus on one famous tube leveller, it offers three compressor flavours, three EQs and 60 preamps for shaping the colour around the compression. Compared with Scheps Omni Channel, a modern all-in-one strip, it is slower and heavier to work with but more about old-time character. It is best when warmth and vintage tone matter more than speed or precise control.

Best for: vintage tube compression, gentle saturation and warm EQ on vocals, bass and buses.
Genres: any; suits retro, soul and rock styles.
Look elsewhere if: you need fast, modern compression or low CPU use (Pro-C 3 is cleaner), or a quick one-knob tube leveller (CLA-2A).

What producers say

Users like its old-time character but see it as an older-generation Acustica plugin with the usability costs that come with that.

VI-Control thread: one user called it "great for old timey character" with "very nice EQ and subtle saturation".
Criticisms: another VI-Control member praised the EQ and saturation but said it still shows traces of what made older Acustica plugins less pleasant to use, and pointed to newer, lighter releases.
Acustica in general: the same thread mentions sluggish GUI response and high CPU use across the older range.
