Multiphonics CV-3 is a modular synth and effects environment from AAS, with physical modeling oscillators and filters, FM modules and MPE support.
Patches are instantly polyphonic, and it comes with 105+ factory synths, for $199.
Best for: Keys & Synths, Sound Design. Genres: Electronic & EDM, Ambient & Cinematic.
Keywords: physical modelling, MPE support, modular, polyphonic, FM, creative, undo/redo, 80s, built-in analyzer, cinematic, macro controls, musical, organic, preset-driven, resizable UI, sequencer, sound design, tempo-synced, warm.
What it does
Multiphonics CV-3 is AAS's modular rack for building synths and effects from patchable modules, with the company's physical modeling blocks as its signature. The developer calls it "a creative modular rack for musicians and sound designers."
- 80+ modules: 10 audio generators, 12 filters, 12 signal processors, 9 CV generators, 7 shapers, 5 mixers, 5 maths and logic modules, 3 clocks and sequencers, 2 VCAs and 5 visualizers.
- Physical modeling: modeled resonators and acoustic-object generators for warm, organic tones alongside standard oscillators.
- FM: the 3.1 FM+ update added an FM Core operator module next to the 3-operator modules, for 1980s-style digital sounds.
- Polyphony and MPE: a patch turns polyphonic with one click (CDM notes 8 voices), and MPE controllers such as the Seaboard and Osmose are supported.
- New in CV-3: an 8-segment envelope and a spectrum analyzer module, among others.
- Workflow: scalable GUI, macro modules, drag-and-drop layout, duplicating modules with or without their cables, quick CV patching, undo/redo, tempo sync and a built-in module and patch browser.
- Content: 105+ polyphonic factory synths and 560+ presets (400+ synth patches in 23 categories, 150+ effect patches in 13 categories); the +PACKS bundle raises that to 1,200+.
The current version is 3.1. It is also sold bundled with 6 sound packs. A 15-day fully working trial is available, and purchases carry a 30-day money-back guarantee.

When to use it
Multiphonics CV-3 is the pick when you want to patch your own instruments and effects and want physical modeling sounds that general modular tools don't have. Compared with Phase Plant and Pigments 7, it is a true patching environment rather than a synth with fixed engine slots, so it is slower to a finished sound but far more open. Next to VCV Rack, CDM found it less open-ended but more integrated and stable, with polyphony that works the same way across every module. It is much less of a preset player than Omnisphere 3 or Serum 2: the presets are there, but the point is building and changing patches. Its polyphony and MPE support make it a playable instrument rather than only a sound-design lab.
- Best for: modular patching, physical modeling experiments, MPE performance, generative patches and custom effects.
- Genres: electronic, experimental, ambient and cinematic.
- Look elsewhere if: you want a ready-to-play synth with a simple panel (AAS's own Ultra Analog VA-3, or Pigments 7), or a huge free module ecosystem (VCV Rack).
- Tip: open a factory synth and rework it instead of starting from an empty rack; the patches show how the modules fit together.
What producers say
Reviewers rate it highly for sound and its physical modeling, with small workflow gaps as the main complaint.
- CDM (Peter Kirn, 2025) called it the "best available single set of software modules on the market", praising the polyphony, MPE, glitch-free preset switching and the physical models.
- Gearspace user review (Tommy Zai, 2025) rated it 4.75 out of 5 (5 for sound, ease of use and features, 4 for value), calling it "fun, inspiring, inviting, and very, very musical" with stable, modest CPU use.
- Criticisms: CDM missed a searchable module menu, typed parameter entry, internal tuning tables and fine-tune knobs on some oscillators, and found shift-drag adjustment imprecise.
